Sailing Fiji Islands

Fiji, the land of happiness and serenity, is a dream destination for travellers looking for a tropical getaway. With its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush green forests, Fiji is a place where you can truly unwind and escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Whether you're an experienced sailor or just looking for a relaxed island adventure, Fiji is the perfect place to explore.

The best time to visit Fiji is from May to October, during the dry season when the weather is warm and sunny. During this time, you can take advantage of the clear skies and calm waters to set sail and explore the many islands of Fiji. With over 330 islands to choose from, you'll never run out of places to discover and new adventures to embark on.

One of the best ways to experience Fiji is by sailing. Whether you choose to rent a sailboat or join a chartered sailing tour, sailing in Fiji offers the chance to explore some of the most beautiful and pristine waters in the world. From the tranquil lagoons of the Yasawa Islands to the hidden caves of the Sawa-i-Lau Island Group, there's always something new and exciting to discover in Fiji. I was lucky enough to spend a few weeks sailing with my Uncle, who had just sailed from New Zealand to Fiji, on his boat last year.

When it comes to dining in Fiji, you can expect to be treated to an abundance of fresh seafood and traditional Fijian dishes. From juicy prawns and succulent lobster to mouth-watering crab and delicious tuna, there's a wealth of seafood options to choose from in Fiji. And if you're looking to try something a little more exotic, the Fijian cuisine offers a range of unique and flavorful dishes, including taro, cassava, and kokoda.

For those looking to immerse themselves in the local culture, Fiji is a place where the traditional way of life is still very much alive and well. From the vibrant and lively local markets to the welcoming and friendly locals, there's always a chance to experience the real Fiji.

Tips for sailing in Fiji

  • Be prepared with yaqona (kava root) to present at a sevusevu for villages

  • You must submit notice to Fiji Customs at least 48 hrs before arriving in Fiji

  • Be cautious of cyclone season

  • Most developed sailing grounds are between Viti Levu and the Mamanuca Islands

So where are the best places to sail in Fiji? Here are a few of my top recommendations:

  1. Yasawa Islands: The Yasawa Islands are a chain of 20 volcanic islands that offer breathtaking landscapes and secluded beaches. The waters here are calm and crystal-clear, making them perfect for snorkelling and diving.

  2. Mamanuca Islands: The Mamanuca Islands are a group of 20 small islands located to the west of Viti Levu, Fiji's main island. These islands are known for their stunning beaches, turquoise waters, and lush vegetation.

  3. Bligh Water: Bligh Water is a deep-water channel that separates the main island of Viti Levu from the Yasawa Islands. It is known for its strong currents, which make it a popular spot for game fishing.

  4. Lautoka: Lautoka is a city located on the northwest coast of Viti Levu and is the second largest city in Fiji. It is a great place to stop and experience local culture, try some delicious food, and explore the local markets.

Discovering the Rich Culture of Fiji: A First-Person Experience

As a traveller, I am always drawn to destinations that offer a unique and rich cultural experience, and Fiji certainly delivers on that front. From the vibrant festivals and ceremonies to the traditional dances and music, the culture of Fiji is truly a feast for the senses. One of the most interesting aspects of Fijian culture is the rich history of the indigenous people, known as the iTaukei. They have a strong connection to their traditions, which are deeply rooted in their animist beliefs and their respect for the natural world. The iTaukei has a fascinating history of oral storytelling, which they continue to pass down through generations.

Another hallmark of Fijian culture is its music, which is a rich mix of traditional and contemporary styles. From the haunting melodies of the lali drum to the upbeat rhythms of modern pop songs, music is an integral part of daily life in Fiji. Food is also an important part of Fijian culture, and you'll find a delicious array of local dishes to try during your stay. From traditional dishes like taro and cassava to more modern cuisine, there's something for everyone in Fiji's diverse culinary landscape. Finally, the festivals and ceremonies of Fiji are truly a sight to behold. From the thrilling firewalking ceremonies to the colourful rituals of the Indian Diwali festival, there's always something exciting happening in Fiji.
