How to save money travelling

As a budget traveler myself, I know how important it is to find ways to save money while still having an amazing travel experience. After years of traveling on a tight budget, I've picked up some valuable tips and tricks for stretching my dollars further and how to save money travelling. In this post, I'll share with you some of my top recommendations for saving money on accommodation, food, and transportation while traveling.

Budget accommodation

Staying in hostels is a fantastic option for budget travelers, especially if you're traveling alone. Not only are they budget-friendly, but they also offer opportunities to meet other travelers from around the world. Hostels also often offer free activities, tours and events, and the staff can provide insider tips on the best local spots to visit.

Airbnb can also be a great option for budget travelers. Not only can you often find a private room or entire apartment for less than the price of a hotel, but you can also have access to a kitchen to prepare your own meals. This can save you lots of money on dining out, and you can use the opportunity to visit local markets and cook with fresh ingredients.

Food choices to save money travelling

One of my favourite things about traveling is trying new foods, and you don't have to spend a lot of money to do it! Eating street food is a great way to sample the local cuisine while also saving money. Just make sure to choose vendors that are popular with locals and look for high turnover to ensure the food is fresh. Another way to save money on food is to eat at local cafes and restaurants away from tourist hotspots. These places often offer authentic and delicious food at much lower prices than those catering to tourists. If you're feeling adventurous, try asking locals for their favourite spots to eat. If you're staying in an Airbnb or hostel, take advantage of the kitchen facilities to prepare your own meals. You can buy ingredients from local markets and supermarkets, and cook up delicious meals that can save you a lot of money.

Transportation options: how to save money travelling

Public transportation is often the cheapest way to get around, so make sure you research local buses, trains, and subways before arriving. You can save a lot of money by purchasing day or week passes. In some cities, you can even rent bicycles or electric scooters to get around for a reasonable price.

If you're in a city with a lot of walking paths, consider walking to your destination or renting a bike. It's a great way to save money, get some exercise, and see more of the local scenery. Just make sure you take necessary precautions, such as wearing a helmet and staying safe on the roads.

In some locations, ride-sharing services like Uber and Grab can be an affordable alternative to taxis. However, be sure to compare prices before choosing a ride to ensure you're getting the best deal.

By following these tips, you can travel on a tight budget without sacrificing your travel experience. The key is to be creative and flexible, plan ahead, and research your options. With a little bit of effort, you can stretch your dollars further and have an amazing adventure. Happy travels!
