Budget Accommodation for Expats in London

Moving to a new city, especially one as expensive as London, can be challenging when it comes to finding affordable accommodation – trust me, I'm writing this as I sit on a bunk bed in a hostel! However, with a little research and some creative thinking, you can find a place to live that fits both your budget and your lifestyle. Here are five budget-friendly accommodation options for expats in London:

  1. House-sharing: Sharing a house or apartment with other people is a cost-effective way to reduce your housing expenses. Websites like SpareRoom and Flatmate Finder allow you to search for potential roommates and room rentals in London.

  2. Hostels: Hostels can be a great budget-friendly option for those who don’t mind sharing a room with others. They offer a range of accommodation options, from private rooms to shared dorms, at affordable prices. I'd recommend you book in advance to avoid that last minute price jump.

  3. Airbnb: Airbnb is a popular choice for travelers and expats in London, and it’s a great way to find affordable, short-term accommodation. You can book a private room, a shared room, or an entire apartment, depending on your budget and preferences.

  4. Serviced apartments: Serviced apartments offer more space, privacy, and amenities than traditional hotel rooms, and they can be a cost-effective option for long-term stays. You can find serviced apartments in many neighborhoods across London, from central locations to more suburban areas.

  5. Budget hotels: While budget hotels may not offer as much space as other accommodation options, they can be a cost-effective option for those looking for a comfortable and convenient place to stay. Look for budget hotels in less central areas of London, or consider booking outside of peak travel times to get the best deals.

Whichever accommodation option you choose, be sure to do your research and compare prices and amenities before making a decision. If you are worried about securing a rental right away (can be tough), book yourself some accommodation in London with free cancellation eg, through for peace of mind – you can always cancel it once you've locked something else in. Booking a few months in advance will mean cheaper rates too. Use sites like Shopback (when using to get between 5-11% back on your booking as well!
